IRIS Conference Presentation
The dim backstage light flickered, casting long shadows as Joe Marston adjusted the microphone clipped to his collar. His heart pounded with a steady, insistent beat, but he forced his hands to remain still. The weight of the moment pressed down on him, threatening to crush him beneath its intensity, but he couldn’t afford to show weakness now. Not when everything depended on this presentation.
“Joe, you good?” Alexandra Stahl, his partner and colleague who preferred the name Alex, peered at him over the rim of her glasses, her brow furrowed in concern.
Joe nodded stiffly. “Yeah. I’m fine.”
Alex didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t push further. They had been through too many of these moments—moments where the future of their company, Anastasium Inc., hung in the balance. “Just remember, Christina’s presentation blew them away earlier. The expectations are sky-high now. We can’t afford—”
“I know,” Joe cut in, his voice sharper than intended. “I know what’s at stake, Alex.”
Alex’s lips tightened, but she nodded. “Just… be ready. The last trial didn’t go well, and this is our last shot.”
Joe inhaled slowly, the echo of past failures reverberating in his mind. Today, he promised himself, would be different. It had to be.
“I’m ready,” he said, though the words felt brittle, as if they might shatter under the weight of his doubt.
Behind him, Ana’s familiar footsteps approached, soft but steady. She touched his arm gently, her warmth a small anchor in the storm of his thoughts. He glanced at her, and for a moment, the worry in her eyes threatened to unravel him. But he hardened himself, bracing against the rising tide of emotion.
“Joe,” she whispered, “Are you sure this is the right way?”
He looked into her eyes, and something inside him wavered, but only for a second. “It’s too late to turn back,” he said quietly. “EDeN has to work.”
